About Our Role:

Penny Bissett Consulting is the Canadian contact here in Ontario, for D'Youville College. We are able to answer general questions from Canadian students considering application to D'Youville programs.

We are not admission officers and do not make the final evaluation of your application, which should be submitted "online" directly to the admissions office on the Buffalo campus. However, we are happy to assist you along the way. Feel free to contact us anytime.

Feel free to contact me at: <penny@pennybissett.org>

How We Can Help:

We are happy to discuss the programs, requirements, tuition, and give you guidance as you begin investigating DYC as a choice.

We can guide you through the website where you will find most answers to your questions, especially about the Teachers' Education Certification program.

If you are interested in other DYC programs, undergrad and/or graduate level, please use the "links" button under D'Youville College on our menu to access direct links to all programs.

Below is a summary of the Canadian Teachers Certificate and Masters programs.

You will require 1/2 credit in a foreign language as well. If you lack the foreign language requirement, coursework may be taken concurrently at D’Youville College, at a local college or university. Students with 2 full years of high school foreign language or one old OAC or grade 13 credit will be granted a waiver.

Natural science courses include: biology, chemistry, physics, astronomy, geology, botany, zoology.

Social studies courses include: economics, geography, history, politics, law, sociology/family studies.

Mathematics courses include: algebra, calculus, linear equations, geometry. Math does NOT include business or financial math.

Admission requirements for Adolescent (Secondary Education) :

You must have at least 30 credits (5 full year courses) in the teaching area you select with a minimum grade of "C". Candidates must also have 3 credits (½ full year course) in a foreign language.

If you lack the foreign language requirement, coursework may be taken concurrently at D’Youville College, or at a local college or university. Students with 2 full years of high school foreign language will be granted a waiver.

Canadian students pursuing adolescence education certification will receive one teachable subject from D’Youville College and will qualify to teach that subject within the Province of Ontario. The Ontario College of Teachers requires that all secondary education students upgrade for a second teachable subject at a Faculties of Education program in Ontario. This can be completed after you obtain your Certificate of Qualification. Upgrading to the second teachable is a fairly easy process, plus you have six years once you begin teaching to accomplish any courses the OCT deems necessary. When you present your documents from DYC to the OCT, they will issue you an interim certificate which enables you to start teaching immediately. The certificate is valid for 6 years. Once you complete the second teachable, you will receive your permanent teaching certificate for Ontario.

Candidates will also be required to take the Liberal Arts and Sciences Test, Written Assessment of Teaching Skills and Content Specialty Test sections of the New York State Teacher Certification Examination. CLICK HERE

For students lacking the "foreign language" requirement, D'Youville will accept "American Sign Language".

Some Tips on the "Forms" to be completed:

The Financial Form: must be submitted AFTER you have been offered admission. You must take the form from the website (download pdf) to your bank and ask them to assist you in completing the info. In addition, you will need TWO ORIGINAL copies of a letter from your bank indicating the amount of money you have available to pay for your time at DYC. It should be described as to where the money is (eg: savings, loan, line of credit, etc.) and that it will be made available to you when you need it.

The Health Forms: They also need not be submitted until you have been accepted. Download the health forms and take them to your doctor who will complete the questions and update any shots that you need to have.
